Brazil’s President Bolsonaro Goes Through Another Coronavirus Scare

Does he have it? Does he not? For some haters of the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, it will be a “serves him right” or an “about time” moment. Bolsonaro has been playing Russian roulette with the coronavirus for months and escaped unscathed every time.

According to Correio Brasiliense, the daily paper of the capital city Brasilia, Bolsonaro’s Covid-19 test results will come out this afternoon. He is reported to have a 100 degree fever.

According to The Brazilian Report, Bolsonaro was unmasked and hanging with close friends and colleagues at a Fourth of July party in Brasilia this weekend. He may have caught it from them.

Brazilian equities aren’t too concerned. The iShares MSCI Brazil (EWZ) ETF is up 0.6% in mid-morning trading on the NYSE.

Roughly two years ago, the firebrand president was elected in a near landslide against the Workers’ Party candidate Fernando Haddad, a man who literally wore a campaign T-shirt saying he was actually another person — as in Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva — the jailed Party leader at the time. Bolsonaro has been in the crosshairs of opposition party leaders and their advocates in the press ever since his victory.

Bolsonaro has a penchant for shooting himself in the foot, and has no fear of walking into a hornet’s nest. He has been battling with politicians, with the press, with judges, since day one.

He has been battling the coronavirus since February, when he infamously said that if he catches it he will be fine and it will be like he has a “little cold”.

Later today, we will know how well Bolosonaro is doing with his fever. And what caused it.

Brazil seems to have hit peak coronavirus, based on daily infections published by Johns Hopkins University. The case load has decelerated over the last week.

The country has had over 1.6 million people infected by the new SARS, first reported in China in December.

Bolsonaro, who is active on Twitter, has not posted anything on his timeline to dispel with the chatter that he has contracted the virus. CNN Brasil was the first to report that he had Covid-19. I will leave it at that.
